An increasing number of men in all walks of life are seeking improvement in their appearance through plastic surgery, as our society emphasizes the importance of looking young and fit. Older men competing against their youthful counterparts may feel that their appearance inhibits their professional advancement in the job market. Others may have had a change in marital status, are starting a business or moving to a new environment and as a result, will want to look their best.
Men's interests in having cosmetic surgery often involve a more balanced nose, a rejuvenated face, a trimmer waistline and less prominent ears. The procedures used to achieve these goals must take into consideration factors such as skin thickness, beard growth, and body type. In 2004 men in the United States had almost 1.2 million cosmetic surgical procedures, an increase of 8 percent over 2003, according to the statistics of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Inc. The top surgical procedures for men were liposuction, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and male breast reduction.
